THE ROLE

Job Purpose

BBC Radio Berkshire serves a diverse population of almost 1 million people in urban centres like Reading and Slough, historic Windsor and rural West Berkshire. Our shows are all about celebrating where we live, telling great stories and having fun with our listeners. We’re looking for a talented and enthusiastic social media journalist to join our diverse team, bringing Berkshire’s stories alive on-air and online. 

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

You will be responsible for the day-to-day running of our social media accounts and you will reversion content to appeal to online audiences who might not normally listen to live radio.

You will work alongside Audio production teams, the Regional Social Lead and social media colleagues in News to drive engagement and the growth of referrals from sites like Facebook to BBC products and services, including BBC Sounds.

Your work will promote radio station activities and your creative film-making skills will help you to turn the biggest local talking points into content for social media and our broadcast output. 
 
You will be the champion of new social media formats like radio studio visualisation and you will need to be a big believer in teamwork because you’ll often be the person colleagues turn to for help - so you should enjoy helping others to develop their digital skills.
 

Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience

This is a great opportunity for someone who loves radio, storytelling and podcasts and believes in the potential to reach new audiences on social media platforms.

You don’t need to have a background in journalism or news – you just need to know a great story when you hear it. An appreciation of local services is important, but you don’t need to have worked in local radio. This is an exciting opportunity, and a real chance to make an impact.

Ideally, you’ll already have film-making skills and know how to shoot and edit your own material using MoJo kit or DSLR cameras and software like Final Cut Pro. You might also know how to use online publishing tools like Social Flow and iBroadcast. You might also have a good knowledge of social media analytics and know how to spot emerging trends in performance.

Decision making High level of responsibility and decision making; able to operate alone. No managerial responsibility. May be informally supported by junior staff i.e. Researchers, Coordinators and Assistants. Scope Covers a wide range of journalism activity, producing news content and supporting the production and presentation of programming.
