Software engineers are at the heart of the future of the BBC for one simple reason: they are ones that will design the products and services which will form the foundation of our interactive TV output. So it’ll come as no surprise to learn that the team has won plenty of awards and that they are key to Future Media’s ambition to create the most valued open digital media services in the world. This is your chance to join them.
About the role
We want to transform the BBC for an interactive, on-demand world and find new ways of reaching audiences wherever they are, with new formats across PC, TV, mobile devices, gaming platforms (like Xbox), and recorders like TiVo. You’ll help do that by building TV experiences for all BBC Online products, and by defining and building Red Button services. You’ll also act as a central point of contact between the BBC and the TV device and software industry, presenting a single technical face to OEMs and platform providers.
Our work will shape the entire broadcasting industry, globally. To play your part in this you’ll need experience in two of the following (and the ability to rapidly acquire new software skills): Java, C++, C#, JavaScript, ActionScript, MHEG, and Ruby. You’ll also need knowledge of internet protocols and technologies, a solid grounding in OOP, an understanding of design patterns, and an appreciation of good user experience. With your track record of producing maintainable code within collaborative environments, you’ll have experience of working with source control systems.
BBC Future Media is the driving force behind the BBC’s digital media proposition. We design, develop and run digital services and products. Our aim is to allow audiences to enjoy the BBC’s best content via their preferred route, whether that’s online, mobile, or through internet-connected TV. This cutting-edge group is responsible for delivering the BBC iPlayer (online and on TV), the BBC News site, BBC Sport, BBC Weather site, BBC Children’s games on TV and online, the Red Button, the BBC Wildlife finder, BBC Lab UK and the BBC Radio 1 Chart, to name just a few.
